On 17 February intrepid photographer Niall Laybourne braved the elements, walking some 18km, to capture these amazing photos of the Independent Snow Plough unit tackling deep drifts near County March Summit

The history of the Independent Snow Ploughs (ISPs) is surprising and very interesting. The National Railway Museum has this blog page which explains how it was that Network Rail needed to see some engineering drawings produced in Darlington by the LNER in 1924.
