The Journey to Nowhere
Editor's note: We asked our Treasurer for his thoughts on his commuting experiences in the south of England - and so for something very different!
A dark and dreary morning amid the Sussex Downs
A blanket of snow
The sleet is falling the air is kind of thin
Will ScotRail fair better with snow upon the ground ****
They're probably running services upon The Far North Line...
Snow time - could be no show time.. for ours to Victoria, Littlehampton or destinations beyond
I can feel the excuses mounting I have not left the house
Oh what joy...........
The weather is now lousy the omens not too good for a day commuting along the Sussex Downs
I could admit defeat and sink under the covers but curiosity says I commute with others
A blast of icy wind confronts this diffident commuter upon leaving the house
A virgin snowy path at 6 am as I venture down the road
Very quiet
The snow is inches deep
I expect its rather deeper upon the ScotRail metals
A trickle of commuters confront the snowy waste
But where are the trains The information does not say
Situation normal
We meander to Hove all stops
Oh I wish this could be Beauly, Muir of Ord, or Dingwall
Just a trial
We now return
Oh what a silly commuter I mutter under my breath as we start for Littlehampton upon my railway quest
They seek to reassure as we pass West Worthing second time around
The main line is blocked they fail to mention
I have simmering indignation of this journey now begun
This could be fun
The journey now completed I'm returned at home - Four hours wasted
What now, A very large coffee and a bacon bun...
