We are hoping there will be a visit to Altnabreac by train from Thurso led by our President, John Thurso, this summer.
The plan would be to travel on the 13:06 from Thurso and alight at Altnabreac at 13:35. On the train, John will tell us about living at Altnabreac when he was a boy and helping to signal the passing trains.
Our return train is at 13:55 and arrives at Thurso at 14:24. Those who wish to have much longer at Altnabreac could travel on the morning trains which arrive at 09:03 from the north and at 10:30 from the south, or they could stay on until the 17:01 southbound or 17:21 northbound.
This visit is likely to be in July or August, but as the date has not yet been fixed, would all those who would like to go please email Malcolm Wood, our Secretary and give him your contact details so that we can get back to you when the date is decided. Thank you.
Malcolm can be reached on secretary@fofnl.org.uk or, for those without email, his phone number is 01863 766350.
Altnabreac by Mountain Bike. [from Active Outdoors no 7 spring/summer 2015 p34. Scottish Provincial Press]:
"Take the train to this request stop for a 16 mile circuit on mostly flat estate tracks. The route is waymarked by faded arrows, with a map on the station platform. It leads past a series of lochs and past a farm - listen out for the barking dogs - before the ruined Dalnawillan Lodge, then heads back past an unusual building alongside Loch Dubh."
